The Daily Brief

Bakersfield Daily Brief: Sunday, August 23, 2026

Good morning, Bakersfield. It's Sunday, August 23, 2026, and we're starting the day with a high of 103°, air quality at a moderate 64, and no active weather alerts. Overnight, the big story was a grass fire that grew to three or four acres south of Highway 46 near Wildwood Road, drawing a battalion-level wildland response. We'll have more on that and the night's other incidents below, along with the details on a pair of deadly shootings that have shaken our community. Grab a cup of coffee and read on.

The Kern Overnight

The night's most significant call came around 4:30 a.m. when a grass fire broke out in a field near a small trailer community just east of Wildwood Road, reachable off Highway 46. Crews reported three to four acres burning with roads on three sides of the fire; Battalion 3 was on scene and asked for additional wildland units as Engine 931 worked its way in from the south. Before that, just after 3:30 a.m., a vehicle rolled over in the median on a northbound highway just south of Twisselman Road, with reports of power lines down across the lane. Units were en route to that incident as well. Earlier in the night, around 1:55 a.m., an outside fire was reported on the 100 block of Sumner Street near the railroad tracks, and engine companies were dispatched. About 2:10 a.m., someone was reported coming into a campground wearing a gray t-shirt, gray pants and no shoes; units were checking the area. Hot, dry late-August conditions kept fire crews on the move overnight: the three-to-four-acre grass fire south of Highway 46 near Wildwood Road drew a battalion-level wildland response, and an outside fire was reported on Sumner Street near the railroad tracks. The Twisselman Road rollover with downed power lines prompted a quick highway response, and overnight temperatures stayed warm across the valley.

Today's weather

Expect a high near 103° and a low around 74° tonight. It's currently 73° at Meadows Field (KBFL). No active weather alerts for Kern County. Air quality is 64 — moderate.

According to 23ABC, a 26-year-old man was shot and killed at the Capri Laundromat on Perkins Avenue in McFarland. Officers responded to the scene at approximately 3:18 p.m. and found the man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside the laundromat. Officers immediately provided medical aid and initiated CPR, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary information indicates two unknown suspects arrived at the Capri Liquors in the 100 block of Perkins Avenue and confronted the victim inside the Capri Laundromat, which is adjacent to the gas pumps.
