The Daily Brief
Bakersfield Daily Brief: Saturday, August 22, 2026
Good morning, Bakersfield. It’s Saturday, August 22, 2026, and we’re waking up to a warm one — expect a high near 103° today, with a low around 75° tonight. Overnight, the big story was a shooting reported at a Taco Bell in the Baker Street area just after midnight. We’ll have more on that and other overnight incidents below. First, let’s look at what happened while you slept.
The Kern Overnight
A shooting outside a Taco Bell in the Baker Street area was the most serious call of the night. Just after midnight, a witness reported seeing someone shot, with the suspect last seen in a white vehicle. Before that, crews knocked down a fire at a vacant house on King Street around 2:16 a.m. — flames were visible inside the single-story structure, and heavy smoke was showing. Multiple engines and a truck company responded, and the fire was under control by about 2:25. Earlier in the evening, just before 11 p.m., a two-vehicle collision left one vehicle on fire near Gosford Road and Harris Road. Engine 14 and Engine 9 responded to what was dubbed the Harris Incident, though injuries are unknown. And around 10:38 p.m., an assault with a knife was reported — no injuries were noted, and the suspect fled on foot northbound. Elsewhere, multiple reports of a grass fire along southbound Highway 395 north of Brown Road drew a heavy response, though crews found only a small roadside fire that was quickly extinguished.

Expect a high near 103° and a low around 75° tonight. It’s currently 91° at Meadows Field (KBFL). No active weather alerts are in effect for Kern County. Air quality is not currently available, and there are no active fires to report.

23ABC reports that McFarland police are investigating a homicide after a 26-year-old man was shot and killed Saturday afternoon at the Capri Laundromat in the 100 block of Perkins Avenue. Officers responded to the scene at approximately 3:18 p.m. and found the man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside the laundromat. Preliminary information indicates two unknown suspects arrived at the Capri Liquors in the 100 block of Perkins Avenue and confronted the victim inside the Capri Laundromat, which is adjacent to the gas pumps. An argument led to one of the suspects producing a firearm and shooting the victim multiple times. The two suspects then fled the area in an unknown vehicle. No suspects have been identified, no arrests have been made, and the motive remains unknown. The victim’s identity will be released after next of kin have been notified. McFarland Police Department detectives are actively working the scene and gathering investigative information. Police say there is no current threat to the community, but the public is advised to avoid the area until the scene is processed.
