What Happened Overnight in Bakersfield & Kern County
A crash on southbound Highway 99 north of Lerdo Highway left a pedestrian hurt with three vehicles involved, and dispatchers upgraded the call to a rescue just after 2 a.m. Fire crews also pulled a driver from a vehicle that landed on its roof on Highway 14 and put a Mercy Air helicopter on standby, worked smoke at a Niles Street store that had burned before, and cleared a semi that ran into a guardrail south of Highway 166. The rest of the night was medical aids, alarms, disturbances and welfare checks.
The big one
Pedestrian struck in multi-vehicle crash on southbound Highway 99
Just after 2 a.m. crews were sent to a vehicle versus pedestrian crash on southbound Highway 99, just north of Lerdo Highway, where a vehicle was reported facing the wrong way in the freeway. As units responded, dispatchers learned three vehicles were involved and two people were hurt, one of them a pedestrian who was hit. That pushed the call up to a rescue. The pedestrian was reported down in the number one lane and possibly in grave condition, and a second unit reported passing the scene about half a mile into the southbound lanes with several vehicles involved.

The night's serious work was on the roads: the Highway 99 crash north of Lerdo Highway drew a rescue response for a struck pedestrian, a rolled vehicle on Highway 14 needed an extrication, and a semi hung up on a guardrail south of Highway 166 left a road hazard for Caltrans. Fire crews knocked down smoke at a Niles Street store that had burned before and handled a smaller fire against a building on Baker Street near the end of the shift. Medical aids, alarms, disturbances and welfare checks made up the rest of the log. Details remain preliminary until confirmed by an official source.
