What Happened Overnight in Bakersfield & Kern County

A second-alarm fire burned through several buildings at an old desert resort in California City overnight, pulling in water tenders and help from Edwards as crews fought to keep the flames out of a neighboring structure. On Interstate 5 near Copus Road, a semi fire with the trailer fully engulfed blocked lanes and pushed traffic onto Highway 99, and deputies in south Bakersfield sorted out a forced entry that sent three people into an apartment through the front door. The rest of the night was crashes, disturbances, alarms and medical aids.

The big one

Second-alarm fire at the Silver Saddle Ranch & Club in California City

Just after 12:30 a.m. firefighters were sent to the old two-story hotel resort in California City for a large commercial structure on fire, and the call went to a second alarm almost immediately. Crews arrived to find three buildings fully involved with an exposure to the east, plus four spot fires in vegetation to the south that were backing into the wind. The only hydrant on scene was dead, so a water tender was brought in along with support from Edwards. Firefighters kept the flames out of the main exposure while a smaller on-site building became the priority, and about an acre to an acre and a half of grass and brush burned around the complex. The initial fire buildings were reported 100 percent involved, and crews settled in for an extensive mop-up as winds out of the southwest ran light and then turned erratic on one side of the fire.

Around the county

Semi fire shuts down lanes on Interstate 5 near Copus Road

A semi caught fire on Interstate 5 near Copus Road, south of the Grapevine, with the trailer still attached. Crews reported the fire near the wheel wells and then the whole trailer engulfed in heavy smoke. The burning rig blocked lanes and units routed traffic off the freeway onto Highway 99 while heavy towing was called in. One lane was expected to reopen within about ten minutes, and the ambulance was cancelled with no one hurt.

Three people force their way into a south Bakersfield apartment

A hysterical caller reported that two men and a woman forced entry through the front door of an apartment in the 7000 block of Di Giorgio Road. Officers searched the unit and the surrounding area, and medics staged nearby.

Armed man reported standing in a roadway near North Edwards

Deputies were sent to the North Edwards area for a man in a black shirt and gray sweatpants standing in the middle of a roadway with a large firearm, possibly a rifle or shotgun. The caller, who was picking up juveniles from a school event, told dispatchers she left with them and filed a report.

Woman dragged into a pickup on Pacific Street

A caller reported a man in an orange Chevrolet pickup dragging a woman from a residence in the 1800 block of Pacific Street, with the woman heard yelling as she was put into the truck and the vehicle leaving the area. Officers checked the neighborhood and tried to find the truck by its plate and through the license plate readers, but the suspect and the woman were not immediately located.

Night notes

The night's serious work was on two fronts: a second-alarm fire that consumed multiple buildings at the Silver Saddle Ranch & Club in California City, and a semi fire that shut down lanes of Interstate 5 near Copus Road and pushed traffic onto Highway 99. Winds on the California City fire were light out of the southwest, around 5 to 10 mph, and turned erratic on one side of the fire, while a dead hydrant on scene forced crews to haul in water. Deputies also worked a forced entry in south Bakersfield, an armed man reported in a roadway near North Edwards, and a woman reported dragged into a pickup on Pacific Street. Details remain preliminary until confirmed by an official source.
