What Happened Overnight in Bakersfield & Kern County

An overnight vehicle pursuit that ended in a foot chase and a K9 search near Cottonwood Road and White Lane ran alongside a busy night of fires, crashes and crime across Bakersfield and Kern County. Crews handled smoke in a Kern Street commercial warehouse and a brush fire that spread into a compost pile at a South Mount Vernon recycling yard, while an attempted strong-arm robbery at a North Chester Avenue fast-food restaurant and the theft of a hay truck from South MLK Boulevard kept officers working. Traffic units spent the evening on a four-vehicle crash on Mount Vernon Avenue, a pedestrian struck in a three-vehicle crash on Riverlakes and a hit-and-run at South P Street and Bell Terrace. The rest of the log was alarms, medical aids and disturbances.

The big one

Pursuit on Wible Road ends in a foot chase near Cottonwood

A vehicle that failed to stop drew a pursuit shortly before 11 p.m. that ran south on Wible Road past Panama Lane at speeds around 40 mph, with light traffic and no pursuit-intervention attempt as the driver headed toward a dead end. The chase became a foot pursuit with air support and a K9 track into a rural property of shacks and horse pens between Cottonwood Road and White Lane. A subject was seen going into a mobile home on East Panama Lane, and the K9 made contact with a person at the front gate behind a parked truck as officers swept the property through the midnight hour.

Around the county

Smoke in a Kern Street warehouse

At 12:31 a.m. crews were sent to a single-story commercial building in the 1300 block of Kern Street for smoke in the bathroom ventilation of a mechanics warehouse. Engine 21 found light smoke showing from the single-story structure and took command of a minor incident, with workers already on scene.

Brush fire spreads into compost at a recycling yard

At 2:06 a.m. crews were sent to a recycling facility in the 2600 block of South Mount Vernon Avenue for a reported brush fire. They made access and found a large fire in the compost area, roughly 10 by 20 feet, then called the facility to bring in tractors and employees. Crews dumped the water they had, and Engine 41 stayed until staff arrived to take over.

Attempted robbery outside a North Chester restaurant

Just before 10 p.m. someone tried to strong-arm a person outside a fast-food restaurant in the 2400 block of North Chester Avenue. The suspect, in a blue shirt and blue jeans, fled on foot, and the reporting party was standing by just south of the business.

Hay truck stolen from South MLK

At 10:42 p.m. a semi-truck with a black bed full of hay was taken from the 900 block of South MLK Boulevard. The reporting party tracked it heading south on Cottonwood Road near White Lane, and the description went out to units.
