What Happened Overnight in Bakersfield & Kern County

A report of gunfire at the fairgrounds carnival turned out to be a large fight on the Kern County Fair's closing night, and officers spent the evening's first hours working missing-child calls and fights across the midway. A just-occurred assault in the metro area left a victim unconscious and sent a teen girl running from the scene, a hit-and-run on South 8th Street put officers looking for a silver Honda, and crews handled a fully engulfed car fire on Highway 99, a gas leak on Palm Avenue and a rollover near Edison. The rest of the log was medical aids, alarms and traffic checks.

The big one

A gunfire report at the fair came up empty

At 9:52 p.m. officers were sent to the amusement area of the fairgrounds carnival on a report of shots fired, with a caller telling dispatchers that people were running. The response grew quickly, and within minutes units advised there was no gunfire: it was a large disturbance. Several people were seen running from the carnival area, but officers could not find anyone involved. About 25 minutes later officers were sent to a fight in the carnival's north corner. Three missing-child calls came in around the same window: a 13-year-old girl last seen near the Bud Pavilion stage, a 2-year-old girl at the carousel, and an 11-year-old boy near the Ferris wheel.

Around the county

Assault leaves a victim unconscious

At 1:58 a.m. officers were sent to a just-occurred assault on Edwards Avenue in the metro area. The victim was breathing but unconscious, and a teen girl in a red jacket and blue jeans was seen running from the scene. Later in the call the victim was conscious and talking with officers.

Hit-and-run on South 8th Street

Just after midnight a collision on South 8th Street in south Bakersfield left officers looking for a silver Honda that fled. The car was last seen heading west on Highway 58 from Allen Road, and a description went out to units.

Car fire on Highway 99

At 12:55 a.m. crews found a single vehicle off the southbound side of Highway 99 north of Kimberlina Road, fully engulfed in flames. The one occupant was out of the vehicle and conscious, and crews handled the fire from the shoulder.

Rollover near Edison

At 4:45 a.m. crews were sent to a rollover with a possible ejection at Edison Highway and Tower Line. On arrival they reported there was no ejection: two people were out of the vehicle, conscious and breathing.

Night notes

Sunday closed out the Kern County Fair, and the fairgrounds carnival on South P Street kept officers busy well into the evening with the gunfire report, the fights and the missing-child calls. Fire crews had a lighter night, with the car fire on Highway 99, the small grass fire near Old State Road and the gas leak on Palm Avenue the notable calls. Traffic stayed routine apart from the three-vehicle crash on southbound Highway 99 at 7th Standard Road and the rollover near Edison. Details remain preliminary until confirmed by an official source.
