What Happened Overnight in Bakersfield & Kern County

A structure fire in an alley behind Flower Street brought crews out shortly before 1 a.m., two vehicle fires burned at opposite ends of the county in the pre-dawn hours, a grass fire drew multiple reports southeast of the city, and deputies and officers worked a reported firearm at a Union Avenue motel, a crowbar assault and a family dispute that turned into a vehicle ramming call. The county ran a heavy fire shift and a moderate police shift, with most of the police traffic stacked before midnight and thinning out after 3 a.m.

The big one

Structure fire in an alley behind Flower Street at Owens Street

At 12:50 a.m. dispatchers sent a structure assignment for a fire in an alley at Flower Street and Owens Street, and arriving companies were routed in from the alley side. A correction from the scene put the fire in the alley behind the 1000 block of Flower Street. Units reported all companies on scene and stood by while crews checked the building for extension, and the assignment held the address after the initial attack.

Around the county

Grass fire at East Bear Mountain Boulevard draws multiple reports

At 4 a.m. crews were sent to a grass fire described as south of the 48th station area at East Bear Mountain Boulevard. Dispatchers took more than one call to the same area and passed along a report that the fire could reach an electrical pole, and an engine, two patrols and a battalion were assigned. Crews on Interstate 5 reported being just south of the fire.

Assault with a crowbar reported to police

At 2:47 a.m. a victim told dispatchers he had been struck with a crowbar by a man in his 20s wearing all black clothing. The report was taken for follow-up.

Person reported with a firearm at a Union Avenue motel

At 12:58 a.m. officers were sent to a motel on Union Avenue for a report of a person with a firearm. A description went out to units working the call, along with word that the subject was moving on foot, and officers were asked to coordinate on arrival.

Reported firearm in a five-against-one disturbance

At 10:26 p.m. officers were sent to a disturbance that dispatchers described as five or six females against one person, with one female reported to be holding a firearm. The group was associated with a black pickup parked in front of a residence, and the call had started as a report of a physical fight.
