What Happened Overnight in Bakersfield & Kern County
A vehicle burned on southbound Interstate 5 in the Grapevine area and put a small brush fire in the center divider, a pursuit ran north on Madison Street at speeds near 50 mph before officers made a stop, and fire crews were sent to a report of smoke from a roof on Ralston Street. Here is what came over the scanner.
The big one
Vehicle fire on southbound I-5 near the Grapevine
Late in the evening, a vehicle on the right-hand shoulder of southbound Interstate 5 south of the Grapevine was reported fully engulfed, and the reporting party told dispatchers all occupants were out of the vehicle. About fifteen minutes later crews reported a vehicle fully involved in the center divider with roughly a tenth of an acre of brush burning, and said there was no threat to either side of the freeway. The vegetation response was cancelled, the left two lanes were taken while units worked, and a unit on scene assumed incident command.

A white Crown Victoria was run through the system, and a traffic stop was reported on Madison a short time later.
Smoke from a roof on Ralston Street
A truck, an engine and a battalion were sent to the 1300 block of Ralston Street for a report of smoke coming from a roof.

Dispatch relayed that the call hit at about the second residence from Holladay on the east side of 58th Street West, and medics reported they were unable to locate anyone there.

Night notes
Fire and freeway calls carried the night: the vehicle fire and brush in the I-5 median near the Grapevine, a report of smoke from a roof on Ralston Street, and a smoke report on 58th Street West that medics could not locate. Police work ran from a Madison Street pursuit in the evening through a northeast perimeter search after 2 a.m. and a suspicious circumstances call at a city garage just after 5 a.m., with impaired driver reports scattered along I-5, Highway 46 and Old River. The heaviest stretch of calls came in the late evening and again between 2 and 5 a.m., mostly along the freeway corridors and in the central and east parts of Bakersfield.
