What Happened Overnight in Bakersfield & Kern County

A woman who went into the Kern River near the Kern River Golf Course was the subject of a search that ran late into the evening before crews reported they had her, officers chased down a man along the canal bank and Rosedale Highway corridor and recovered cash from him, and CHP hunted a semi that left the scene of a crash on Interstate 5 near the county line. Fire crews also handled a shed fire on Exchange Street and a rubbish fire along the railroad tracks on Edison Highway. Here is what came over the scanner.

The big one

Search on the Kern River near the golf course

A caller reported that a woman had gone into the river and floated roughly an hour toward Lake Ming, with a blue and white raft mentioned in the call. The reporting party, who had been in the water with her, said both of them had gotten out and that there was no reason she would have gone back toward the river. Crews searched the bank behind the Kern River Golf Course and later reported they had her, at a camp just southeast of the golf course area.

Around the county

Truck hit and run on Interstate 5 near the county line

A hit and run was broadcast on northbound Interstate 5 just north of the county line. A Freightliner Cascadia pulling a trailer with damage to the passenger side struck a Kenworth whose occupants were on the right-hand shoulder, and the suspect rig was last seen heading north. About two hours later a unit reported the victim vehicle was still on the shoulder, less than half a mile north of the county line.

Chase along the canal bank ends with cash recovered and an identification

Units went looking for a man with a satchel who was tracked southbound and then eastbound along a nearby street, heading toward the canal bank and Rosedale Highway. A caller reported that he was discarding items near a chain link fence in a clearing by a tree. Officers reported recovering currency from the suspect and asked for the victim to be brought by for an in-field identification.

Shed fire on Exchange Street

A battalion and engine crews were sent to the 800 block of Exchange Street for a report of a back house or shed on fire, with people at the property trying to put it out.

Man knocked unconscious on 19th Street

A caller told dispatchers he had been knocked unconscious and was bleeding. An ambulance was requested to the 19th Street address.

The log

  • 9:22 p.m. Welfare check, East Cedar Street at Franklin Field, Bakersfield. A unit was sent to check on a man reported to be in a 2008 Ford Escape with a rope.
  • 9:29 p.m. Vehicle versus pedestrian, Lincoln Street at Pierce, Bakersfield. The pedestrian was up and walking and did not appear to be injured.
  • 9:42 p.m. Traffic hazard, southbound Interstate 5 north of the Grapevine, Kern County. A white pickup with its hazard lights on was reported in the slow lane, and a short time later it was reported blocking the number 4 lane.
  • 11:03 p.m. Rubbish fire, Edison Highway at the railroad tracks, east Bakersfield. A caller reported fire seen from a distance, and crews found a rubbish fire on the north side of the tracks. Engine 41 handled it and the rest of the assignment was cancelled.
  • 1:25 a.m. Medical aid, Sierra Highway mobile home park, eastern Kern County. A 911 caller reported a suspected overdose, and dispatchers worked to reach family members who were on scene.
  • 2:23 a.m. Verbal disturbance, 2400 block of Boyd Street, Bakersfield. Officers were sent on a priority call after a Spanish-speaking caller asked for law enforcement, with crying and screaming heard in the background.
  • 2:49 a.m. Impaired driver report, Highway, Kern County. A semi with a trailer was reported speeding and moving in and out of its lane.

Night notes

Overnight temperatures stayed in the upper 50s with no rain, and the valley warms back into the low 90s today. Fire crews worked two small fires, the shed behind an Exchange Street home and the rubbish fire along the tracks on Edison Highway, while CHP spent the early morning on a truck hit and run on Interstate 5 near the county line. The heaviest stretches of calls came late in the evening and again between 2 and 3 a.m., mostly along the freeway corridors and in the central and east parts of Bakersfield.
