What Happened Overnight in Bakersfield & Kern County

Fire crews spent more than two hours in the river bottom west of the Westside Canal working a brush fire that dirt-road access made slow, officers were sent to an apartment for a fight in which the caller said one person was armed with an axe and another with a knife, and a pickup was reported stuck on the railroad tracks before dawn. Here is what came over the scanner.

The big one

Brush fire in the river bottom west of the Westside Canal

Crews were sent a little before 9:30 p.m. to a fire burning in heavy river-bottom vegetation between the Westside Canal and the Kern River flood canal, in an area reached on dirt roads off Highway 58. Fire command reported roughly an acre at first look, then about a half acre burning in thick grass and brush, and asked to keep resources coming. Access was the problem of the night: engines staged off the highway, crews working the fire flagged a dirt road in for the units behind them, and one crew on the east side of the canal was told which side to enter from. Forward progress was stopped shortly after 10 p.m. and the dozers were canceled, with a water tender staying on scene for extensive mop-up down in the river bottom.

Around the county

Axe and knife reported in a fight call

Officers were sent to an apartment in the Chester Avenue area around 1:10 a.m. for a fight in progress in which the caller said one person was armed with an axe and a second person with a knife. The caller refused to give any further information and hung up.

Caller reports a woman being choked

Around 10:13 p.m., a caller on a rural county road reported a loud argument between a man and a woman with what sounded like a battery, and said the woman was telling the man to stop choking her. Deputies were sent, and the caller had no description of either person.

Search after possible vehicle into a building

Late in the evening, officers searched a south Bakersfield neighborhood for subjects who ran off after a report of a possible vehicle into a building. Residents along the street reported seeing nothing, and a residence with an open side gate was cleared.

Pickup stuck on the railroad tracks

Just before 4:50 a.m., units were sent to Baker Street and Truxtun Avenue for a pickup stuck on the railroad tracks. The caller was a railroad employee who said his company was being notified.

Night notes

Fire crews carried the night on the west side: a brush fire in the river bottom between the Westside Canal and the Kern River flood canal that took more than two hours to reach, hold and mop up, and a tenth-of-an-acre spot fire between a road and a field break a few hours later. Police work ran from a weapons call on Chester Avenue and a possible vehicle into a building in the south to family and domestic violence calls, several welfare checks and medical aid runs. Two semis with box trailers were flagged to units as traffic hazards, one of them cutting off vehicles at speed on northbound Interstate 5, and a pickup was reported stuck on the railroad tracks at Baker and Truxtun before dawn.
