What Happened Overnight in Bakersfield & Kern County

A garage fire that spread into a Planz Road home brought multiple callers and a full response just after midnight, a shooting in south Bakersfield left one person wounded, and searchers spent part of the night on the water at a county park and on foot along the railroad tracks. Here is what came over the scanner.

The big one

Garage fire burns into a Planz Road home

— Multiple callers reported a garage on fire, attached to the house and burning into the home, in the Planz Road block just after midnight. Two trucks, an engine and two battalion chiefs were assigned. A vehicle was reported at the same address about 40 minutes later, and fire debris was cleared from the area before dawn.

Around the county

One person wounded in a shooting

— Officers were sent south of the city near the river around 1 a.m. for a report of shots fired, with a second caller reporting the situation was still active and someone outside with a firearm. One person was wounded in the leg, and a tourniquet was applied at 1:04 a.m.

Water rescue at a county park

— Deputies and search-and-rescue units were sent to Westdale Park around 10 p.m. after a caller reported a woman in the water near the California Aqueduct. Crews staged and moved toward the water on foot, with a long approach across the park.

Gas leak reported inside a home

— Fire crews were sent to a Meacham Road home shortly after 10 p.m. for residents reporting a major gas leak inside the house.

Search along the railroad tracks

— Late in the evening, officers closed in on someone reported missing and at risk after tracking the person to the railroad tracks in east Bakersfield. Units moved on foot and asked whether train traffic needed to be stopped; traffic was placed under manual control while they worked the area.

The log

  • 11:06 p.m. — Weapons call, South Union Avenue block, Bakersfield. Officers were sent behind a convenience store for a man reported to be known to carry a weapon.
  • 12:00 a.m. — 911 hang-up, Boron. Deputies were sent to a Boron address after a hang-up call in which the caller rambled about a man trying to open a door, and no one answered the callback.
  • 12:45 a.m. — Assault call and standoff, near Center Street and Prospect Street, Bakersfield. Officers were sent to a home where a teenager had barricaded himself in a bedroom after assaulting his parents; the call came from a group home line.
  • 1:13 a.m. — Disturbance, Stockdale Highway block, Bakersfield. Officers checked on a woman heard yelling in a bank parking lot, possibly in a fight with a man, and the pair may have walked behind the building.
  • 1:38 a.m. — Robbery call, Pacific Street block, Bakersfield. Officers were sent to a robbery that had just happened; the person had fled and returned, then gone over a fence on foot.

  • 3:52 a.m. — Welfare check, Robinson Street at Jefferson Street, Bakersfield. A woman told dispatchers she had just woken up in a sedan and said she had been kidnapped.
  • 4:44 a.m. — Emergency alarm, canyon area, Kern County. An emergency button was activated in a white pickup out in the canyons, with deputies sent to check on the driver and CHP requested in case it was a crash; a locked gate blocked access to a residence.

Night notes

Fire crews worked both ends of the county night: a garage fire that burned into a home on Planz Road just after midnight, a reported gas leak inside a home on Meacham Road, a grocery store alarm on Niles Street, and a small fire at a ranch that crews could not find. Police work ran from a shooting in the south to a missing-person search along the railroad tracks, with a bank parking lot disturbance on Stockdale Highway and a kidnapping report from a woman who said she woke up in a sedan. Deputies also handled a water rescue at a county park near the California Aqueduct and an emergency alarm from a pickup in the canyons.
