What Happened Overnight in Bakersfield & Kern County
A vegetation fire along the railroad tracks north of Highway 58 pulled a full wildland assignment before dawn, a chase through town ended with a neighborhood search, and crews spent the evening on a brush fire in the river bottom. Here's what came over the scanner.
The big one
Vegetation fire near the railroad tracks north of Highway 58
— Fire crews were sent to a vegetation fire near the Union Pacific Railroad tracks north of Highway 58 just after 5 a.m., and the assignment grew fast. Two engines, three patrol units, a water tender and two dozers were dispatched, along with multiple battalion chiefs, a division supervisor and a safety officer. A helicopter was placed on standby and air-to-ground coordination was requested if needed, with additional strike-team resources held ready.
Around the county
Chase through town ends in a parking lot
— A pursuit ran westbound along California Avenue at 12:09 a.m. with speeds called out from about 60 to 95 mph, dispatchers noting light traffic and no pedestrians. The vehicle turned off the avenue, went north and pulled into a residence parking lot, where units moved in.
Search through a neighborhood after a pursuit
— Around 2:11 a.m., officers searched a backyard and an attic after a pursuit ended at a home. One person was reported to be in the backyard, a second was last seen walking west, and a K-9 and additional units joined as officers fanned out on foot and checked spots where someone could hide.
Brush fire in the river bottom
— A fire burning in heavy brush and grass in a riparian area was reported at roughly a quarter- to half-acre around 10:37 p.m., moving slowly while crews worked out how to reach it. Access from the river side was being weighed and additional resources were requested as the fire stayed in heavy fuels.
Semi crash blocks lanes on Interstate 5
— A tractor-trailer went down in the number four lane of southbound Interstate 5 around 4:06 a.m. with the driver out putting out warning triangles, and a second semi was on the right shoulder. Units reported the crash and asked for a heavy-duty tow.
