What Happened Overnight in Bakersfield & Kern County

A fight involving as many as 15 people, with a firearm mentioned, sent deputies to a Main Street location before dawn, while crews west of Rosamond took on a three-to-four-acre grass fire. Firefighters also handled two separate fire calls in Bakersfield overnight. Here's what came over the scanner.

The big one

Large fight reported with a firearm mentioned

— Deputies were sent to a Main Street location at 3:22 a.m. after dispatchers took reports of 10 to 15 people fighting outside, including a call from a neighbor who could see the group. A firearm was mentioned during the reports, and the call was handled as an investigation.

Around the county

Brush fire west of Rosamond

— Crews took a grass and brush fire burning three to four acres with a moderate rate of spread and wind out of the west. Command requested a water tender and two additional wildland engines.

Fire on East Terrace Way

— Engine and truck companies were sent to a fire on the East Terrace Way block at 2:11 a.m., with no further information available at dispatch.

Assault reported at a Quincy Street apartment

— Officers were sent to a Quincy Street apartment at 3:57 a.m. after a woman reported that her daughter's boyfriend was assaulting her.

Juvenile knocking on doors for help

— Officers were sent to the Norris Road area late Thursday night after a report of a young person going door to door asking for help and then running east.

  • 9:40 p.m. — Disturbance, Terrace Way apartment block, Bakersfield. Two units were sent to a Terrace Way apartment complex after a caller reported that neighbors were in possession of their pet bearded dragon, which had been missing for several months.
  • 10:14 p.m. — Road closure, eastbound Highway 58 at Mohawk Street. Eastbound Highway 58 at Mohawk was placed under a full closure set to run until 5 a.m.
  • 11:05 p.m. — Reckless driving, southbound Interstate 5 north of Highway 46. A semi pulling an aluminum trailer was reported unable to maintain its lane southbound on Interstate 5 just north of Highway 46, and an officer was sent to check on it.
  • 12:30 a.m. — Medical aid, F Street block, central Bakersfield. An ambulance crew was flagged down at an F Street address for a patient in an alley, and the call cleared shortly afterward.
  • 3:14 a.m. — Disturbance, Donna Avenue block, Bakersfield. Officers responded after a caller reported a brother-in-law at their front door.
  • 3:30 a.m. — Hazardous condition, San Marino Drive block, Bakersfield. Crews were sent to a San Marino Drive address for a person who had contact with a pesticide.
  • 3:32 a.m. — Suspicious person, Wheeler Ridge Road travel center. A caller reported a man who appeared to be under the influence inside a travel center store before walking out to a white sedan with a spare tire on the left side.
  • 5:05 a.m. — Suspicious person, Bakersfield. A man in a black and pink top was reportedly seen with a crowbar trying to open a tan four-door sedan before leaving the area.

Night notes

Fire activity drove the night: a three-to-four-acre brush fire west of Rosamond came in just after midnight with wind reported out of the west, and a second fire call on East Terrace Way followed at 2:11 a.m. Traffic on the east side was disrupted by a full closure of eastbound Highway 58 at Mohawk that was set to run until 5 a.m. Between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m., deputies and officers worked a string of disturbance, assault and welfare calls across the metro area and the outlying county.
