What Happened Overnight in Bakersfield & Kern County
Fire crews answered calls on two fronts late Tuesday, one burning in brushy terrain off Gephardt Road and another beside Dreyer's Ice Cream on District Boulevard, while a person found not breathing at a Buck Owens Boulevard restaurant drew a heavy emergency response in the early hours. The big one
Overdose at Denny's, Buck Owens Boulevard
— Fire and police units responded to a Denny's on Buck Owens Boulevard shortly before 4 a.m. after a person was reported not breathing in an apparent fentanyl overdose. The caller was transferred to fire crews for CPR instructions, and an ambulance was called to the scene.
Around the county
Vehicle into wall, Silver Crossing Street
— A vehicle crashed into a wall in the 5500 block of Silver Crossing Street just after midnight, drawing a full fire assignment alongside Bakersfield police. Both occupants were out of the vehicle when crews arrived.
Fire off Gephardt Road
— A fire was reported off Gephardt Road, reachable by a dirt road that passes abandoned structures. Crews headed in while command kept a visual on the flames from a distance.
Fire near Dreyer's Ice Cream, District Boulevard
— Firefighters were sent to the 7300 block of District Boulevard after a fire was reported next to the ice cream shop, drawing a response from the county.
Person with knife, Goodman Street
— Officers responded to a report of a person armed with a knife on the Goodman Street block and moved to make an arrest.
Assault, North Chester Avenue
— Officers responded to an alley off North Chester Avenue near Washington Avenue after a report that two men were beating a victim on the ground, one of them holding an unknown object.
Burglary in progress, White Lane
— Deputies responded to a White Lane home after a caller reported a person entering through the roof. A second subject in a ski mask was also described, and crews requested a ladder while a K9 was sought, though one was not available.

- 9:24 p.m. — Traffic collision, State Route 58 near MLK Boulevard, eastbound. A traffic stop on SR-58 turned into a medical emergency when a family member in the stopped vehicle needed medical aid.
- 9:54 p.m. — Welfare check, Bakersfield. Dispatchers handled a welfare check involving a Regional Center client who expressed suicidal thoughts but had no access to medication.
- 12:38 a.m. — Medical aid, Brentwood Drive, Bakersfield. Firefighters were sent to Brentwood Drive for a medical aid call involving a person reported possibly unconscious.
- 12:58 a.m. — Homicide-related check, East 19th Street at Baker Street, east Bakersfield. An officer on a bicycle flagged an area near East 19th and Baker streets as potentially connected to a homicide investigation, and units moved in to check the scene.
- 1:06 a.m. — Disabled vehicle, northbound Interstate 5 near Grapevine. A box truck carrying about 20,000 pounds of freight was stopped in the slow lane northbound on Interstate 5 south of Grapevine Road with mechanical issues, and a tow was arranged.
- 3:05 a.m. — Disturbance, Beardsley Avenue, east Bakersfield. Officers responded to Beardsley Avenue after a dispute in which one person was reportedly attempting to take another's vehicle.
- 5:26 a.m. — Disturbance, Buena Vista Boulevard, Bakersfield. Officers responded to Buena Vista Boulevard after a report of a man under the influence knocking on doors and walking near nearby residences; a suspect was detained.
Night notes
Fire activity picked up toward midnight with two separate responses keeping county crews moving into the late hours. The busiest stretch came around 4 a.m., when a medical emergency at an all-night restaurant drew fire, police and an ambulance to Buck Owens Boulevard. Temperatures stayed warm and dry overnight, keeping conditions favorable for brush fires in the outlying areas.
