What Happened Overnight in Bakersfield & Kern County
It was a busy night for fire crews across the county: firefighters knocked down a structure fire in east Bakersfield just after midnight, a vehicle fire sparked in a hotel parking lot on Marriott Drive before dawn, and a grass fire in the Hageman Road area burned through the night with crews planning to finish it in the morning. Deputies also fielded two possible domestic incidents, one involving a child in a car. Here's what came over the scanner from Monday evening into Tuesday morning.
The big one
Structure fire near Mount Vernon Avenue and Niles Street
— A passerby reported smoke coming from a building near Mount Vernon Avenue and Niles Street just before 1 a.m., in the area of a nearby discount store on the east side of Bakersfield. The call drew a heavy response of multiple engines, two trucks and battalion chiefs. Crews had the fire knocked down within about 15 minutes, completed a primary search and stayed on scene for roughly half an hour. No injuries were reported.
Around the county
Vehicle fire at a hotel on Marriott Drive
— A vehicle struck a parked car that caught fire in a hotel parking lot on Marriott Drive just before 5 a.m. A second caller believed someone might still be inside the burning vehicle, so fire crews and an ambulance were sent to the scene.
Grass fire burns through the night on Hageman Road
— A grass fire in the Hageman Road area smoldered with light smoke overnight, but crews said it was contained to an irrigation area with no immediate threat. Firefighters made contact with the landowner and planned to return in the morning with equipment to put it out.
Possible domestic in progress, Paramount Colony
— A domestic disturbance was reported in progress in the Paramount Colony area late Monday, with a caller saying the driver of a dark sedan who was holding a toddler had left an In-N-Out parking lot. Deputies responded as the vehicle's direction remained unknown.
Possible domestic, White Lane
— Officers were sent to an apartment complex on White Lane before dawn after a neighbor heard a woman screaming and a man shouting. Dispatchers kept an open line with a woman who was crying and treated it as a possible domestic incident in progress.
The log
- 12:48 a.m. — Assault_medical_staging, near 2nd Street, Bakersfield. A caller flagged officers down near 2nd Street after an apparent assault, and responders held the call at the same location to stage medical aid for the victim.
- 2:00 a.m. — Welfare_check, Gosford Road, Bakersfield. Deputies were asked to check on a man and a woman reported sleeping in the canal area along Gosford Road in the early hours.
- 3:58 a.m. — Medical_aid_welfare, Brown Street, Bakersfield. Officers and medics were sent to a home on Brown Street for a man reported to have blood on his clothing and to be off his medications.
- 4:10 a.m. — Stranded_motorist, Interstate 5 north of Quebec Avenue, Kern County. A driver who said she had been broken down on the right shoulder of Interstate 5 north of Quebec Avenue since the previous day asked for help getting off the freeway to use a restroom.
Night notes
Fire crews had their hands full through the night, from a structure fire in east Bakersfield to a burning vehicle near the hotel row and a grass fire still smoldering in the northeast part of the county at daybreak. The overnight hours stayed warm and dry, conditions that kept brush and vegetation calls active into the early morning.
