The Kern Overnight — August 16, 2026
A palm tree fire that climbed into the roof of a two-story apartment complex in southeast Bakersfield was the biggest call of the night, drawing a reinforced response with Engine 7 as incident commander on Spice Way. The other headline was a serious one on the freeway: a subject pinned and unconscious in a vehicle on southbound Highway 99 north of 7th Standard Road, where crews cut away a vehicle fire, worked an extrication and pulled two patients out as green tags. Around the county, officers staged on a possible shooting on Price Street that never developed on the air, chased a DUI driver in a white BMW east from the 33rd Street area, and worked a long, low-stakes string of domestics and disturbances — including a Camellia Village apartment with a hole punched in the wall.
The big one
Around 9:16 p.m., a palm tree fire caught the roof of a two-story apartment complex at the Spice Way apartment complex, off Villalobos Street. Dispatchers reinforced the alarm as the fire reached the building, with Engine 7 taking incident command and additional units rolling in. The feed moved on with crews still arriving and the firefight underway; no injuries or evacuations were announced on the air.
Around the county
Pinned subject, extrication on Highway 99.
Just before 1 a.m., a vehicle on southbound Highway 99 north of 7th Standard Road held a subject pinned and unconscious, with a fire in the vehicle drawing Metro 3, medic squad 63, Truck 65 as the rescue group and Battalion 6. Crews knocked down the vehicle fire and extricated two patients, both walking (green tag). The original pin sat near the Los Angeles County line; LA County was advised and patrol units checked the west side of the freeway for a matching vehicle.
Possible shooting, units staging, Price Street.
At 9:48 p.m., what began as a patrol check for an unknown male knocking on a door — who wanted to report fireworks — was upgraded to a possible shooting, with units electing to stage on Price Street. No confirmed shots were heard before the feed moved on.
DUI driver flees in a white BMW.
About 12:13 a.m., a DUI driver fled from the 33rd Street area in a white BMW 5 Series, last seen traveling eastbound. The original location was unconfirmed on the air.
Vehicle into a parked car, Myrtle Avenue.
Shortly before 5:40 a.m., one vehicle struck a parked car at Myrtle Avenue, drawing Engines 46, 47 and 48 plus Battalion 4; crews began a patient assessment.
Street racing near Berkshire.
At 11:24 p.m., multiple callers reported several vehicles racing in the Berkshire area.
The log

- 1:25 a.m. — Suspicious_person, Wallace Street, near East 10th Street. A subject in a tie-dye shirt on a purple bicycle was reported in the area; a unit made contact with the reporting party westbound on East 10th.
- 1:48 a.m. — Disturbance, Camellia Village, South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. A subject who does not reside at the apartment punched a hole in a wall and refused to leave at Camellia Village.
- 5:07 a.m. — Suspicious_person, Moss Rock Drive. A white male, heavy set, with no shirt and black shorts was pacing in front of a residence talking to himself; he fled northbound carrying a television.
Night notes
Fire crews carried the night: the Spice Way apartment roof fire, the freeway extrication with a vehicle fire, and the Myrtle Avenue car-versus-parked-car. Law enforcement ran busy but mostly routine — the possible shooting at Price Street was the only call with real uncertainty, and it never developed into a confirmed shooting on the air. Domestics and disturbances stacked up through the small hours, with a 59-year-old woman's report against her son and a Camellia Village wall-punching standoff the most serious. No confirmed shootings and no major vehicle-vs-vehicle collisions on the overnight feeds.
