The Kern Overnight — August 15, 2026

A grass fire that flared up in a known bonfire spot on the northwest side was the biggest call of the night — a half-acre of brush burning off Nord Avenue and Hageman Road with a battalion-sized response and a water tender offered from Edwards Air Force Base. The rest of the county was a string of disturbances: a vehicle that fled into a dirt field near Morning Drive with Air 1 overhead, a reported gathering of 150 to 250 cars in a furniture store parking lot, and an open 911 line on Goodman Street. Fire crews also checked out AC smoke on East 19th Street and a rural outside fire, neither of which grew into anything.

The big one

Just after 2:20 a.m., reports of flames at Nord Avenue and Hageman Road brought Engine 67, Engine 65, Truck 65 and Battalion 6 to the northwest side. The reporting party told dispatchers the field is a known spot for bonfires and that she'd seen people leaving the area. Crews found about a half-acre of brush and grass burning and called for one additional engine — Battalion 6 was quick to clarify it was not a structure fire, just grass and brush in the field. An Edwards Air Force Base water tender was offered as backup, and the fire was contained to the field with no structures threatened.

Around the county

Vehicle flees into dirt field, Morning Drive.

About 10:54 p.m., a vehicle on the roadway near Morning Drive fled into a dirt field between College and Highland, with Air 1 called up and multiple off-road vehicles reported in the area. The broadcast went out citywide as an attempt-to-locate; no arrest was announced on the air.

150–250 vehicles gather at furniture store lot.

Around 11:28 p.m., a caller reported 150 to 250 vehicles gathering in a furniture store parking lot, drawing multiple units and a request for Air 1. No further update was heard before the feed moved on.

Five- to six-subject 415 with a taser.

At about 10:35 p.m., a disturbance involving five to six subjects included a female in a yellow shirt and shorts reportedly displaying a taser. Units were responding as the feed moved on; the exact location was garbled on the air.

Suspicious attack report, Highway 119.

Shortly before 1 a.m., a caller in a white van west of the AM/PM on Highway 119 reported subjects attempting to attack him. Deputies were checking the area.

Night notes

Fire crews owned the headline for once, but the half-acre grass fire at Nord and Hageman was contained without drama — a known bonfire spot living up to its reputation. Law enforcement handled a busy but mostly low-stakes string of disturbances, with the Morning Drive dirt-field chase and the 150-vehicle parking lot gathering the only calls with real uncertainty left hanging when the air went quiet. Notable for a mid-August night: no major vehicle collisions and no reported shootings on the overnight feeds.
