The Kern Overnight — August 14, 2026

A night that opened with a road-rage pair stalling traffic on White Lane and closed with a stolen van on Kentucky Street and a fender dispute between big rigs at the Flying J. Law enforcement carried most of the load: a 90-plus mph DUI south of the Grapevine, a reported theft from a mobile home park on Barlow Road, and the night's most serious call — an attempt-to-locate after a woman was seen crying for help out the window of a red pickup at Chester and Belle Terrace. Fire crews were comparatively quiet: a residential alarm that amounted to nothing and a vehicle accident that drew an engine, battalion and rescue unit before the air went quiet.

The big one

Around 11:34 p.m., Bakersfield police broadcast an attempt-to-locate and welfare check after a caller described an older-model red truck at South Chester Avenue and Belle Terrace — a male hanging out the driver's window, a female crying and saying she needed help. The truck was last seen traveling southbound. It's the kind of call dispatchers don't sit on: no description of plates or direction of travel beyond southbound, so the broadcast went out citywide for any unit to catch the truck. No further update was heard on the air before the feed moved on.

Around the county

Road-rage 415, East White Lane.

Just after 9:23 p.m., city units were sent to White Lane for a possible road-rage disturbance: a blue Honda with paper plates and a white pickup, both eastbound, repeatedly stopping and blocking the roadway. Dispatched as a 415 vehicle with no further update heard.

Stolen van, Kentucky Street.

At 10:33 p.m., a white 2001 Dodge van with California plates was reported stolen on Kentucky Street. Officers took the report; no arrests were announced on the air.

DUI at speed, south of the Grapevine.

About 11:39 p.m., CHP broadcast a 23152 on southbound I-5 south of the Grapevine — a newer black pickup at speeds over 90, passing on the shoulder, the driver seen drinking from an open container. Units were responding as the feed moved on.

Big-rig collision, Flying J.

Shortly before 3 a.m., a traffic collision in the Flying J truck stop parking lot at Frazier Park: the victim's burgundy Freightliner was hit by a red Peterbilt, with the other party denying involvement. CHP was investigating the hit-and-run claim.

The log

  • 9:10 p.m. — Traffic_enforcement, 600 block 33rd Street. Traffic unit requested for the 600 block of 33rd Street.
  • 11:00 p.m. — Fire_alarm, Greenview Lane. Residential fire alarm at a Greenview Lane home, reported by the residents.
  • 12:09 a.m. — Theft, Barlow Road area. Theft reported from a space at a mobile home park on Barlow Road; loss estimated at roughly $3,900.

Night notes

Law enforcement dominated a mostly routine overnight — the road-rage pair, the stolen van and the high-speed DUI made up the bulk of the action, while the red-truck welfare check at Chester and Belle Terrace was the one call with real stakes, and it stayed unresolved on the air. Fire crews had one of the quietest nights in recent memory: a residential alarm and an accident response, nothing more. Pre-dawn traffic was thin, with the Flying J collision the last notable call before sunrise.
