The Kern Overnight — August 13, 2026
A warm, dry night that kept fire crews busy from the first hour of the evening to just past 2 a.m.: a ridge fire in the Kern River Valley that briefly drew helicopter and dozer resources, a vehicle fire that spread to half an acre of grass near Edison Road, and a fire inside an abandoned building on Union Avenue that crews knocked down without losing the tire shop next door. The law-enforcement side was quieter by comparison — a reported shooting toward a business in the Taft area, a cooking-oil assault involving an infant in west Bakersfield, and a brief Code 33 that cleared within a minute. The early-morning hours settled into routine medicals and alarms.
The big one
Just after 9:28 p.m., dispatch sent a substantial wildland response to the 7200 block of Round Mountain Road in the Kern River Valley after a caller reported what looked like a campfire-sized grass fire on the ridge, crawling downhill toward the river. The initial order included Engine 363, water tender 67, helicopter 409, dozers, two battalion chiefs and a division supervisor — a full initial-attack package for what could have been a fast-moving hillside fire. It turned out small: by 9:44 p.m. crews reported a small fire in the black that local equipment could handle, and the response was scaled back without incident. No structures were ever threatened, and no injuries were announced on the air.
Around the county
Reported shooting, Valley West Road.
Around 10:59 p.m., a caller reported unknown subjects shooting toward a business near Valley West Road and Highway 119 in the Taft area, about six shots fired from the roadway just west of the intersection. Deputies were sent to investigate; no disposition was heard on the air before the feed moved on.
Structure fire, Union Avenue.
Just after 1 a.m., crews found fire inside an abandoned building near a tire shop on Union Avenue east of downtown. Engine and truck companies opened a roll-up door to get inside, and the fire was confined to the abandoned structure — dispatchers confirmed the adjacent business was not affected and its owner was being contacted. Two men were reported leaving the area northbound as units arrived.
Cooking-oil assault, west Bakersfield.
Around 10:21 p.m., officers were sent to a domestic incident in the 15th Street West area where a woman had thrown cooking oil at the reporting party and an 11-month-old infant. The incident was under investigation; no arrests were announced on the air.
Vehicle fire spread to grass, Edison Road.
About 1:43 a.m., a vehicle fire near Edison Road and Chase Avenue spread into dry grass, growing to roughly half an acre with a moderate rate of spread. Crews caught it with an engine and patrol support; county arson declined the call, and CHP was asked to check on the possibility the vehicle was stolen.

Night notes
Fire was the story: three vegetation or vehicle-fire starts between 9:28 p.m. and 2 a.m., led by the Round Mountain ridge fire that drew the night's biggest response before being held small. Law enforcement ran lighter — one shooting report, one felony-level assault, and a Code 33 that resolved almost immediately — and the pre-dawn hours faded into routine medicals and alarms. The Kern River Valley and the east side of town carried most of the load; downtown and the southwest were quiet.
