The Kern Overnight — August 17, 2026

A group of juveniles with a firearm — one of whom pointed a gun at the reporting party — on Monterey Street was the headline call of the night, and it was a close race with a shots-fired incident that had units checking local hospitals for gunshot victims. Fire crews handled a one-acre grass fire near the bike path off Oak Street, and officers worked a domestic violence call in progress on Animas Court, plus a shotgun-wielding ex-boyfriend at a Ming Avenue parking lot. The small hours ran quieter, with the usual spread of disturbances, medical aids and welfare checks.

The big one

Juveniles with a firearm, Monterey Street.

Around 11 p.m., a caller reported a group of five juveniles — one of whom pointed a firearm at them after claiming a gang affiliation — on Monterey Street. All were described as wearing dark clothing. No shots were reported on the air, and units were responding as the feed moved on.

Around the county

Shots fired, hospitals checked.

Shortly before 9:40 p.m., a possible shots-fired incident had units checking local hospitals for gunshot victims and looking for a suspect vehicle. The exact location was unclear on the air.

Domestic violence in progress, Animas Court.

At 9:54 p.m., a domestic violence call in progress (273.6) drew multiple units to a residence on Animas Court.

One-acre grass fire near the bike path.

Just after 10:30 p.m., crews found a one-acre grass fire with a slow rate of spread near the bike path, accessing it from Oak Street and pulling an additional line.

Shotgun used to smash a windshield, Ming Avenue.

Around 11:03 p.m., an ex-boyfriend reportedly smashed a vehicle windshield with a shotgun in the FoodMaxx parking lot on Ming Avenue. The reporting party was standing by.

Shattered door, possible burglary, Manhattan Drive.

At 11:33 p.m., a possible burglary at a Manhattan Drive residence — a sliding back door found shattered — had deputies investigating.

Night notes

The night belonged to a couple of gun calls — the juvenile-brandishing incident on Monterey Street and a shots-fired report that had officers checking emergency rooms — though neither escalated into confirmed gunfire on the air. Fire crews stayed steady with the Oak Street grass fire, a tow-yard vehicle fire and a riverbed fire at Yokuts Park. The tail of the overnight feed (roughly 2:30–6 a.m.) was still transcribing at publication, so the log reflects the committed portion of the night.
