Good morning, Bakersfield. It’s Tuesday, August 25, 2026, and we’re starting the day with a high of 102° and air quality at a moderate 54. The Kern Overnight

Overnight activity kept officers busy across Bakersfield, with a notable incident unfolding shortly before 11 p.m. near Union Avenue and Columbus Street. A caller reported two men in an older tan Toyota Camry attempting to get an 18-year-old woman into their vehicle. Officers searched the area as the vehicle was last seen heading northbound on Union Avenue. Into the early hours of Tuesday, police also responded to a disturbance on the 2800 block of C Street, where a subject was reported in possession of a butcher knife while the reporting party stayed barricaded in a bathroom. Elsewhere, officers pursued a minibike at low speed through east Bakersfield, with the chase moving westbound on Oregon Street, northbound on Gage Avenue, and across Niles Street at speeds between roughly 15 and 37 mph. Around 3:15 a.m., a unit began tracking a 2017 Nissan that refused to stop in east Bakersfield. And around 12:30 a.m., a woman reported her ex-boyfriend threw a brick through her vehicle and patio door on Coventry Drive, with officers investigating the incident.

Top stories

23ABC reports that the Bakersfield community gathered Monday night at the Dignity Health Sports Complex for an evening of prayer and music to remember 17-year-old Levi Brown, who was killed outside an Independence High School football game Friday night. Bakersfield police say the shooting was gang-related, and a 15-year-old suspect was arrested Saturday. On Monday, police announced six more arrests, including three teens, as officers worked to prevent potential retaliatory gang violence. Police say those arrests are not directly connected to Brown’s homicide. Bakersfield Chief of Police Brent Stratton spoke Monday morning about the shooting’s ties to gang activity, noting that the age range of those involved in such incidents is unfortunately common. Manuel Carrizalez, founder and director of Stay Focused Ministries, knew Brown through his organization, which mentors teens and other students through school visits and office meetings. Carrizalez said Brown had a lot of goals and was looking towards his future.
