What Happened Overnight in Bakersfield & Kern County

A fire near the Kern-Tulare county line burned a structure and then spread into grass before crews and a battalion contained it, the largest call of a night that also saw a grass fire the size of a house near a Bakersfield church, light smoke found inside a building on Baker Street, and a robbery that ended with one person in custody. Officers worked a priority domestic call on Brimhall Road, a man reported knocking on doors with a firearm, and a resident who found a stranger inside the home through an unlocked door. The rest of the overnight log was medical aids, alarm calls, and traffic stops.

The big one

Structure fire spreads to grass near the county line

At 1:46 a.m. crews were sent toward County Line Road east of Road 40 after callers reported a large column of smoke and a glow. What started as a structure fire had spread into grass and was pushing north at a slow rate of spread, settled at about five acres. Crews anchored off the roadway and worked the heel and flanks, with a second unit covering the structures on the south side. Command reported the fire contained and crews in cleanup, and mutual aid that had been requested from Tulare County was canceled.

Around the county

Grass fire the size of a house near a church off Auburn Street

At 10:18 p.m. a patrol, two engines and a battalion were sent to grass burning the size of a house near a church off Auburn Street in the Morning Drive area after multiple callers reported it. The full assignment went to the fire.

Smoke inside a building on Baker Street

At 1:28 a.m. crews reported light smoke showing from one side of a building in the 900 block of Baker Street and said they were going in to investigate, with incoming units staged and an incident commander assigned. An earlier alarm at the same block was cleared after a crew walked the building, found no audible alarm and no sign of distress or hazard inside.

Priority domestic call on Brimhall Road

At 12:47 a.m. a priority one domestic call was broadcast for the 9500 block of Brimhall Road, behind a business. The suspect was described as a man in his 30s in all black who left in a gray pickup, with a second man in dark clothing in an unknown sedan.

Stranger walked into a home through an unlocked door

At 1:14 a.m. deputies were sent after a resident reported that a neighbor had come into the home through an unlocked front door, gone as far as a bedroom door and then crossed the street. The suspect was described as a man 18 to 20 years old in a black shirt and jeans, slim with curly hair.

Robbery ends with one person in custody

At 3:01 a.m. several units were called to assist after a robbery was reported and officers put one person in custody. The victim told officers the robbery happened just east of where the stop was made.

Man with a firearm reported knocking on doors

At 12:52 a.m. deputies were sent to a suspicious person call where the caller, working through a language barrier, reported a man in his 30s in a black shirt knocking on windows and doors while carrying a firearm.

Night notes

Two fires shaped the small hours: a fast call to grass burning the size of a house near a church off Auburn Street around 10:18 p.m., and the county-line fire that started in a structure and spread into grass before it was contained with mutual aid canceled. Everything between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. was small calls and checks, with light smoke inside a Baker Street building the only other thing that pulled a full assignment. The last report before dawn was a fire call at Union Avenue and East California Avenue.
