What Happened Overnight in Bakersfield & Kern County

One person was shot in the arm at a home southeast of Bakersfield in the middle of the night, and a gas leak reported at the same scene brought extra units in. Crews spent the late evening pulling smoke out of a senior living building, roughly 20 juveniles were reported fighting near a county park, and a 6-year-old girl was reported missing near the carnival. Downtown officers broke up a robbery over a phone at 21st and Chester Avenue, and the hours before dawn were mostly medical calls and welfare checks.

The big one

Shooting southeast of Bakersfield leaves one wounded

At 1:33 a.m. units were sent to a shooting in the 10400 block area southeast of Bakersfield, where dispatchers relayed that one victim had been shot in the arm and that there was no suspect description to put out. An ambulance was routed to the scene and units were told they were clear to enter. Crews working the call also reported a gas leak inside the structure, and additional units were started toward the scene to stage.

Around the county

Smoke inside a senior living building

At 10:29 p.m. engines, a truck and a battalion were sent to a senior living complex in the Brookside Drive area after a burnt smell was reported coming from two vents and smoke was reported fogging inside one of the buildings. Crews reported smoke inside the structure and worked the building, and asked that the main breaker on a condenser unit on the east side be shut down while they investigated. About 50 to 60 vehicles stayed in the lot during the response.

Robbery over a phone downtown

At 12:58 a.m. downtown units were sent to 21st Street and Chester Avenue for a strong-arm robbery, where the caller said a phone had been taken from her. The suspect left in a black SUV and then came back to the scene, where the argument was still going when officers arrived.

Roughly 20 juveniles reported fighting near a county park

At 9:55 p.m. deputies were sent to a park area in the county for a disturbance reported to involve about 20 juveniles and several subjects arguing near the park, with weapons unknown. A fire engine that had been started toward the call was canceled.

6-year-old reported missing near the carnival

At 9:34 p.m. officers took a report of a missing 6-year-old girl last seen near the kids' carnival in a pink cowboy T-shirt. Around the same time, deputies learned that a subject they were looking for was part of a missing juvenile case out of the agency.

  • 3:51 a.m.: Welfare check, 4500 block of Columbus Street. The call turned into a report of someone on the hood of a car while the driver backed the vehicle up, trying to throw her off.

Night notes

Carnival traffic ran through the first half of the night, with a 6-year-old reported missing near the kids' carnival, a call for a woman in the parking lot just outside a carnival ride and a welfare check in the same area. Dispatchers moved to stage ambulances early because of road conditions, and the hours after 2 a.m. shifted almost entirely to medical calls and welfare checks. Apart from the shooting, the fire calls that took real work were the smoke investigation inside the senior living building and a fire east of a golf course that crews had to find their way in to reach.
