What Happened Overnight in Bakersfield & Kern County
Fires did most of the work overnight, and one call at 3:30 a.m. was the serious one. Crews ran a vehicle fire that reached a house on South King Street just after 11 p.m., a quarter-acre grass fire off 7th Standard Road at 1:11 a.m., and two more structure fire assignments between midnight and 2:30 a.m. Around those, city officers handled a foot pursuit that ended in custody near South H Street and a welfare check on Columbus Street, and a woman told dispatchers she had been forced into a car at gunpoint and made to drive. Most of the overnight traffic stayed inside the city, and the busiest stretch ran from 10 to 11:30 p.m.
The big one
Woman forced into a car at gunpoint
At 3:30 a.m. a caller told city dispatchers that a woman had been forced into a vehicle and made to drive with a firearm held at her. The man was described as under the influence of methamphetamine, wearing a gray sweater and jogger pants, and the vehicle as a blue sedan that left eastbound on California Avenue. A second caller, on a different phone number, reported a woman yelling for help near South Oleander, and dispatchers could hear a female voice saying a man was attacking her. A domestic violence call over a divorce situation came in from the 400 block of Cypress Street at about the same time. Officers were given the suspect and vehicle description and searched the area.
Around the county
Vehicle fire reaches a house on South King Street
Just after 11 p.m. a full structure assignment went out for a vehicle burning next to a house in the 200 block of South King Street. Crews were told the fire was spreading to the house and then to the roof. A caller told fire dispatchers that someone had lit her house on fire and that the person might still have been at the scene. Dispatchers set any alarms at that address to priority one for the rest of the night after a separate report that an ex-husband had tried to get into the home.
Quarter-acre grass fire at Magnolia Avenue and 7th Standard Road
At 1:11 a.m. the sheriff's office reported a brush fire at Magnolia Avenue and 7th Standard Road, and an engine, a patrol unit and a battalion were sent. The first unit on scene found about a quarter acre burning at a slow rate of spread, moving east and south along the road. A second engine and another patrol unit were added to the call.
Power pole down with live lines near East California Avenue and Washington Street
At 10:43 p.m. crews were sent to a downed power pole with transformers and active power lines just north of East California Avenue and Washington Street. The caller asked that the area be blocked off so nobody would walk into the wires, and the utility was asked to respond. It already had a work order open on that line.
More structure fire assignments on Height Street and 23rd Street
A structure assignment went out at 11:48 p.m. for the 700 block of Height Street, with three engines and a battalion dispatched. At 2:15 a.m. crews were sent to a fire threatening a building in the 1800 block of 23rd Street, and the first unit on scene kept one engine on the call while cancelling the rescue and truck.

Night notes
The fire calls clustered between 11 p.m. and 2:30 a.m., when crews ran the vehicle fire that reached a house, the grass fire off 7th Standard Road and two more structure assignments. The 3:30 a.m. kidnapping report came in while the city was otherwise quiet, and the traffic around it was search and dispatch work only. The rest of the night was welfare checks, suspicious-person reports and single-unit medical calls, and the loudest stretch ran from 10 to 11:30 p.m.
