The Kern Overnight — September 4, 2026
A driver led officers on a prolonged chase up Madison Street without stopping, and a domestic assault with a weapon at a Bluestone Riverway home left minor injuries and drew a large response just before 3 a.m. Later in the night a semi truck hauling produce caught fire in the center divider of Interstate 5 near Fort Tejon, and crews knocked down a building fire near Edwards Air Force Base.
The big one
Long pursuit on Madison Street.
Around 9:30 p.m., a driver who refused to yield led officers northbound along Madison Street without stopping. The chase stretched past the 10 o'clock hour, with speeds climbing to roughly 55 mph on roadways otherwise empty of pedestrians and traffic. Units picked up the pursuit after the initial stop was refused, and there was a brief concern over a possible gunshot before the chase continued north.
Domestic assault with a weapon near Bluestone Riverway.
Around 2:55 a.m., a man was accused of attacking his girlfriend with scissors and throwing a vase at her hand during a domestic dispute, leaving minor injuries. Officers and medical units responded to the residence, where juveniles were present and one reported a nosebleed; a caller disputed a claim that one of the juveniles was pregnant.
Around the county
Semi-truck fire on Interstate 5 near Fort Tejon.
Around 4:46 a.m., a semi hauling produce caught fire in the center divider on southbound Interstate 5 about two miles north of Fort Tejon, the cab burning while still connected to the trailer. Fire crews and a water-carrying unit responded, and roughly 15 feet of guardrail on the east side was damaged; Caltrans was notified to repair it.
Structure fire near Edwards Air Force Base.
Around 12:26 a.m., reports of smoke from a building pulled a large fire assignment — multiple engines and a battalion — to the Edwards Air Force Base area. Crews found only light residual smoke reaching into the attic, cancelled reinforcements and scaled the response back to a regular structure fire.
Burglars caught on camera cutting their own feed.
Around 12:37 a.m., an employee watching live surveillance saw two hooded males force their way into a business on 15th Street West and begin taking items. The employee then lost connection to the cameras — possibly because the suspects had removed them — and units began clearing the area.
Domestic incident in progress.
Around 11:40 p.m., a domestic call turned urgent when a caller could be heard yelling in the background before the suspect began chasing her. Officers responded to the East 21st Street area, where the caller reported being struck near 21st and D Street.

Night notes
The overnight span was marked by one long-running pursuit and a steady string of domestic and welfare calls rather than any single large-scale emergency, with activity picking up again toward dawn. The worst of the highway trouble came just before 5 a.m., when the burning semi closed the center divider of Interstate 5 near Fort Tejon, and a small grass fire flared along Highway 119 shortly before 6. A structure fire near Edwards Air Force Base was contained quickly, while officers split their attention between family disturbances and a pair of late-traffic incidents near the Kern River and out on Highway 33.
