The Kern Overnight — August 22, 2026

A shooting outside a Taco Bell in east Bakersfield was the night's most serious call — a witness told officers they saw someone shot, with the suspect last seen in a white vehicle. Before that, crews knocked down a fire at a vacant house on King Street, a two-vehicle collision with one car on fire at Gosford and Harris became the Harris Incident, and a reported grass fire along Highway 395 drew a heavy response that was quickly scaled back.

The big one

Shooting reported at a Taco Bell, Baker Street.

Just after midnight, a witness reported seeing someone shot at a Taco Bell in the Baker Street area. The suspect was described as a white male in his 40s to 50s, wearing a black shirt and dark pants, sitting inside a white vehicle — possibly a Ford Explorer. Officers responded with an officer-safety broadcast.

Around the county

Fire at a vacant house, King Street.

Around 2:16 a.m., flames were visible inside a vacant single-story house on King Street with heavy smoke showing. Multiple engines and a truck company responded, and the fire was under control by about 2:25.

Two-vehicle collision with one car on fire, Gosford and Harris.

Just before 11 p.m., a two-vehicle collision left one vehicle on fire near Gosford Road and Harris Road. Engine 14 and Engine 9 responded — one car was smoking with another about a quarter mile back — and command dubbed it the Harris Incident. Injuries unknown.

Grass fire, southbound Highway 395 north of Brown Road.

Multiple reports of a grass fire drew a large response — engines, patrol units, a water tender, a dozer and a helicopter. Crews found a small roadside fire that was quickly extinguished, and the extra equipment was canceled.

Assault with a knife.

Around 10:38 p.m., an assault with a knife was reported with no injuries. The suspect — about 6 feet tall with neck tattoos, wearing black shorts, a gray shirt and white shoes — fled on foot northbound.

Night notes

Late-August heat kept fire crews busy overnight: a vacant-house fire on King Street and a grass fire along the Highway 395 corridor were both knocked down quickly. The pre-dawn hours kept CHP moving on Interstate 5 and Highway 99 — including a Greyhound bus whose passengers reported a drowsy driver — and the Baker Street shooting remained under investigation as the weekend began.
