The Kern Overnight — August 21, 2026
A semi truck and trailer fully engulfed on northbound I-5 south of Grapevine became the night's longest-running incident — crews were still working the Tejon fire after 6 a.m. with traffic backing up to the Lebec service route. Before that, a fast-moving brush fire on McCombs Road north of Wasco drew the heaviest fire response of the evening, an armed robbery in north Bakersfield and a burglary with possibly armed suspects kept officers moving, and a foot pursuit at a trucking yard south of Gibson Street closed out the night.
The big one
Semi fully engulfed, northbound I-5 south of Grapevine.
Just before 1 a.m., a semi truck with a trailer was fully engulfed in the number three lane of northbound I-5 south of Grapevine, with CHP and Engine 56 on scene and command established as the Tejon Incident. The fire burned for hours: by 6 a.m. crews were still working it, a heavy-duty tow had been called in, and traffic was backing up to the Lebec service route.
Around the county
Brush fire, McCombs Road.
Around 10:34 p.m., a quarter-acre brush fire on McCombs Road (State Route 43 north of Wasco) was burning with a fast rate of spread and potential to run west. Multiple engines and a water tender responded, additional wildland equipment was ordered, and crews split into Division Bravo and Division Yankee for what command described as a lengthy mop-up.
Burglary with possibly armed suspects, Woodford Boulevard.
Just after 3 a.m., two subjects were on a Woodford Boulevard property behind a white pickup, possibly taking items. The subjects were known to be in possession of firearms, though none were visible at first; officers later made contact and located a firearm.
Armed robbery, Denise Avenue.
Around 9:50 p.m., a robbery at gunpoint was reported on Denise Avenue in north Bakersfield. The suspect was described as a transient white male in his late 30s, wearing a baseball cap and black face mask, pulling a wagon, and accompanied by a white female.
Foot pursuit at a trucking yard, south of Gibson Street.
Around 4:36 a.m., three subjects at a trucking yard south of Gibson Street were reported possibly taking items. Deputies set a perimeter and the subjects ran — one headed south toward a fence with an officer holding the hole. One subject was described as known to carry a knife.

Night notes
Three vehicle fires along the I-5 Grapevine grade made for a busy night for Kern County crews, with the Tejon semi fire burning well into the morning commute and backing traffic up to Lebec. August heat and dry brush kept grass-fire risk elevated, and the McCombs Road fire showed how quickly a small start can escalate a large response.
