The Daily Brief

Bakersfield Daily Brief: Monday, August 31, 2026

Good morning, Bakersfield. It’s Monday, August 31, 2026, and we’re starting the week with a high near 91° and air quality at a moderate 58. Overnight, a tractor-trailer fire on Pacheco Road made for a busy night for our first responders. Let’s get you caught up on Kern County.

The Kern Overnight

The night brought a mix of incidents across Kern County, from fires to welfare checks. Around 11:26 p.m., crews responded to a reported fire on Pacheco Road. By 11:35, units described the tractor as a total loss, with the trailer being salvaged. Shortly before midnight, a caller reported hearing a shot from inside his living room, and medical units were on scene. Around 2:48 a.m., officers went to Ginger Oak Lane for a welfare check with medical aid requested. The reporting party was crying and unable to answer questions, with a baby heard crying in the background; a subject was later seen running through the carport toward a warehouse, and units held the perimeter. Around 12:58 a.m., officers were sent to Potomac Avenue near Oswell Street for a large party that turned into a physical fight, with one caller reporting possible shots heard — unclear whether fireworks. Around 10:08 p.m., a man threatened to shoot the reporting party’s husband during a verbal dispute at a Bakersfield apartment complex. No weapon was seen at first, but the same subject was later seen walking through the complex with a baseball bat. Other incidents included a collision near Panama Lane and Ashe Road, a verbal dispute during which a possible gunshot was heard, a physical fight at an apartment on H Street, a trucker on the highway needing CHP to arrange a tow, an attempt to locate a 7-year-old last seen on a residence’s front porch wearing a black shirt, a welfare check on a woman who told bystanders she had been thrown out of a vehicle, medical aid for an unknown complaint on South 8th Street, medical aid for a possible overdose where Narcan was administered, a search for a suspect armed with a switchblade who fled on foot north on Mount Vernon Avenue, medical aid on South Haley Street where interpreters were requested, medical aid for a seizure, and a man on a scooter reportedly armed with a knife — and possibly a gun — last seen near a 711 parking lot in the Olive Drive area.

According to 23ABC, the USS Abraham Lincoln sailed past Singapore early on Sunday as it headed home after a grueling deployment in the Middle East. The aircraft carrier, one of the U.S. Navy’s largest warships, was supporting the U.S. war against Iran during its deployment. Its transit near Singapore marks a key point in its journey back to its base in San Diego. The Lincoln’s deployment included a record-setting uninterrupted time at sea of more than 250 days, and concerns had grown about the crew’s mental health and supply shortages. The carrier is expected to stop in Thailand for a port visit before continuing its journey home.

KGET 17 also told us that thousands of cold remedy nasal swabs are being recalled nationwide due to potential contamination. The recall affects certain lots of the product and is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Consumers are advised to check the lot numbers of their nasal swabs and to discontinue use if their product is affected. Further details on the recall, including the specific lot numbers and instructions for returning or disposing of the affected items, are expected to be released by the manufacturer.

Bakersfield Now said that the Bakersfield Police Department is seeking possible victims after a man was arrested for sexual assault cases dating back to 2017. The arrest has prompted investigators to look into whether there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward.
