What Happened Overnight in Bakersfield & Kern County

An assault with a baseball bat on the east side, a welfare check that deputies had to find through a phone ping, a rollover on Interstate 5 that was gone by the time crews arrived and a vehicle fire on Mount Vernon Avenue were the calls that stood out Sunday evening. Kern crews also helped Los Angeles County on a grass fire near the county line, and units worked a gas leak, a roadway hazard and a pair of welfare checks. Here is what came over the scanner.

Around the county

Assault with a bat

Just after 11 p.m. a caller reported an assault with a baseball bat that had happened at Flower Street and Lincoln Street. The caller waited nearby for officers, and a suspect description went out over the radio.

Deputies track a welfare check through a phone ping

Late Sunday evening a woman told dispatchers her husband had said he planned to kill himself. Deputies were sent to the area east of Bakersfield, with the location found through a ping on the man's phone, and units were checking the area.

Rollover on Interstate 5

A rescue, engine, truck and battalion assignment went out with CHP for a reported rollover on southbound Interstate 5 south of Bakersfield. The first crew on scene reported the vehicle had rolled over and then left, and the rest of the response was cancelled.

Vehicle fire on Mount Vernon Avenue

Fire crews were sent for a gray SUV burning on Mount Vernon Avenue.

The log

  • 9:33 p.m. Vegetation fire check, Interstate 5 near the Grapevine. Units reported nothing showing on the southbound side and the vegetation response was cancelled.

  • 10:11 p.m. Grass fire, where Highway 138 meets Highway 14. Los Angeles County dispatchers asked Kern units to respond, and an engine and a water tender were sent.

  • 11:02 p.m. Welfare check, 2100 block of Coventry Drive, Bakersfield. Deputies and an ambulance were sent to check on someone at a home.

  • 11:52 p.m. Public assist, 800 block of 8th Street, Bakersfield. Officers were sent to assist at a home.

Night notes

The busiest stretch of the evening came between 9 and 11 p.m., when crews ran a gas leak, checked the southbound side of Interstate 5 near the Grapevine and answered a mutual aid request from Los Angeles County for a grass fire where Highway 138 meets Highway 14. Sheriff's deputies spent part of the evening working a welfare check they had to locate through a phone ping, and CHP handled two roadway hazards on the southbound side of Interstate 5. The rest of the night stayed calm, with calls clearing without anyone hurt.
