The Kern Overnight — August 19, 2026

A grass fire east of Bakersfield that swelled to 5–10 acres drew the night's heaviest response — dozers, helicopter 409 and a water tender among the resources dispatched to what crews dubbed the Apollo Incident — while a fire in a downtown alley that spread toward a house on Bell Avenue upgraded to a structure response in the early hours. A two-vehicle head-on on Copus Road west of Old River pulled a multi-engine assignment with an air ambulance placed on standby, a vehicle plowed into a building on South Union Avenue, and shots were reported fired overnight. The rest of the night ran to the usual spread: burglaries, domestic calls, medical aids and disturbances.

The big one

Grass fire grows to 5–10 acres, east of Bakersfield.

Just after 1 a.m., crews got word of a grass fire burning roughly 2 miles east of the county dump and north of the railroad tracks. The first update put it at 3–5 acres, growing to 5–10 as units arrived — engine 345, water tender 12, dozers, a safety officer and helicopter 409 among the response, with crews working access through corral roads off Newmark. Union Pacific train traffic was held while crews mopped up.

Around the county

Alley fire spreads toward a house, Bell Avenue.

Around 4:34 a.m., a fire in an alley across from the 100 block of Bell Avenue spread toward a house and was upgraded to a structure response — Station 64, Truck 1, medic squad 63 and Battalion 6 among the assignment.

Head-on collision, Copus Road west of Old River.

Just after 5:30 a.m., a two-vehicle head-on roughly 5.5 miles west of Old River Road pulled multiple engines plus a truck. An air ambulance was placed on standby and later stood down, with one ground ambulance cancelled as crews handled it.

Vehicle into a building, South Union Avenue.

Around 3:48 a.m., a vehicle reportedly drove into a building on South Union Avenue, with CHP en route and Battalion 4 dispatched.

Shots reported fired overnight.

Just before 3:52 a.m., a single reporting party reported multiple shots heard; the exact location was unclear on the air as units responded.

Night notes

The Apollo grass fire east of the dump was the headline — a fast-growing fire that needed dozers and a helicopter to corral and held up Union Pacific traffic during mop-up. The Bell Avenue structure fire and the Copus Road head-on were the other heavy responses of the early hours, and the feed transcribed cleanly through the full overnight window, so this edition covers the entire night.
