The Daily Brief

Bakersfield Daily Brief: Sunday, September 6, 2026

Good morning, Kern County. It's Sunday, September 6, and the story shaping the day is a heavy one: Bakersfield police are investigating the death of a pedestrian struck during a high-speed pursuit in North Bakersfield early Saturday, with two suspects in custody. The weather, at least, is offering a gentler note — 72 degrees at Meadows Field, a high near 86, no weather alerts and no active fires — a fine close to the Labor Day weekend.

The Kern Overnight

It was an active night across Kern County, with law enforcement and fire crews moving from one call to the next from the north end of Bakersfield to the far edges of the county. Officers with helicopter support chased two subjects who fled on foot across a property near Golden State Avenue in north Bakersfield, setting up a perimeter as the search stretched into the early hours. A separate foot pursuit wound through residential yards near Decatur Avenue, where officers boxed the suspect in between two fenced properties and brought the chase to an end.

In eastern Kern, crews responded to a pair of vehicles that struck power poles in the span of the night. One vehicle left the roadway and hit a pole in a vineyard off King Street, shearing it and bringing down power lines; another rolled onto its roof after crashing into a pole along Edison Highway just west of the main corridor, drawing a combined response from fire and law enforcement. Utility crews were left to sort out the damaged lines as the scenes were cleared.

Firefighters also spent the early hours on a vegetation fire burning on both sides of the railroad tracks and riverbed just east of Golden State Avenue, with crews sent in to knock it down before it could spread. In the Fremont Street area on the south end of the street, multiple units responded to a fire at an apartment complex, and fire crews were dispatched to a reported vehicle fire on Highway 99 just north of 7th Standard Road in the south county.

Two other calls kept officers busy through the night, both ending without injury. On Pacheco Road in south Bakersfield, a person reported to be armed with a knife was located in an alley area; the weapon was found and the situation was resolved peacefully. In the 18th Street area, a possible intoxicated driver fled a location after claiming to have a firearm, last seen heading southbound, with units searching the area.

Today's weather

It's a comfortable 72 degrees right now at Meadows Field, and the valley should climb to a high near 86 this afternoon before settling to a low around 64 tonight. There are no active weather alerts for Kern County, air quality reports are not posting a reading, and no active fires are burning in the region.

One thing to keep in mind for the rest of the holiday weekend: Bakersfield Now reports that forecasters are staying "weather aware" through Labor Day as moisture from Hurricane Marie could work its way into the region. Nothing is set in stone, but it's worth keeping an eye on the sky if your Monday plans take you outside.

Top stories

A bystander was killed early Saturday morning when a car being pursued by police lost control on Airport Drive and struck him, KGET 17 reports, and two suspects are in custody. According to 23ABC, Bakersfield police were trying to arrest 21-year-old Isaiah Andrade — wanted on a Ramey warrant for firearm possession and gang-related charges — when he climbed into the passenger side of a vehicle driven by 20-year-old Gabriel Lopez, who refused to stop. Officers deployed spike strips as the car traveled south on Airport Drive; in an apparent attempt to avoid them, the driver lost control and hit the pedestrian on the west sidewalk, where he was pronounced dead. Both Lopez and Andrade fled on foot from the crash but were quickly captured.

The Kern Autism Network marked its 30th anniversary Saturday at the Bakersfield Country Club, according to 23ABC, celebrating an organization that started as a parent support group in 1996 and has grown into a source of education, community events and support groups for families across Kern County. President Bernard Puget told 23ABC he and his wife Ramona became involved about 25 years ago after doctors warned that their young son could one day be institutionalized — a future they refused to accept, and one that led them to help other families find their footing. Board member Grant Davenport said the network's support groups now serve women, families and adults, and the milestone did not go unrecognized: Mayor Karen Goh presented a certificate, and a representative from Congressman David Valadao's office offered a plaque.

The city of Maricopa is set to consider installing two Flock cameras, KGET 17 reported, a proposal that would bring the automated license-plate reading technology to the small southwest Kern community. The item is headed for consideration before city leaders, a sign that the region's network of the cameras continues to grow as local agencies weigh their use in investigations.

Volunteers from St. George Greek Orthodox Church are deep into prep work for this year's Greek Food Festival, 23ABC reported, with about 10 cooks working since 8 a.m. on family recipes passed down through generations. Mother and daughter Liz Rodgers and Ariel Munoz told 23ABC the event has been a family tradition for 40 years; the rice pilaf they were preparing came from Rodgers' Greek in-laws. New this year are feta bites — pieces of feta coated, fried and drizzled with honey — along with raffle tickets for a trip to Greece. Volunteer Irene Sinopole said roughly 5,000 people attended last year, and the church expects that number to grow.

Something good

There are a couple of things worth smiling about in Kern County this weekend. The Kern Autism Network's three decades is one of them — an anniversary that started with parents refusing to accept a bleak prognosis and turned into a community standing beside other families walking the same road. The Greek Food Festival volunteers are the other: 40 years of cooking, dancing and sharing culture with the whole county, with the rice pilaf already prepared and frozen, ready to be brought back to life for the crowds. It's the kind of week where the best of the valley is on full display.

Coming up this week

Monday is Labor Day, the last day of the long weekend, and the last chance to enjoy the summer weather before the week settles in — though that Hurricane Marie moisture from the forecast is worth watching for holiday plans.

Looking at the week ahead at the Fox Theater, there's a full slate: Justin Willman brings his One for the Ages Tour on Thursday, Sept. 10; comedian Max Amini performs live on Saturday, Sept. 12; and Clay Walker's Doin' What I Love Tour takes the stage on Sunday, Sept. 13. The Cults & Classics series continues Monday, Sept. 14 with a screening of Fargo, and the theater closes out the stretch with It's a 2000s Party on Friday, Sept. 18.

For those keeping an eye on local government, Maricopa city leaders have the two-camera Flock proposal on a coming agenda, as KGET 17 reported, and the Greek Food Festival is drawing closer by the day as the volunteers keep cooking. It's a full week ahead — enjoy the holiday, stay cool, and keep the radio on.
