The Daily Brief
Bakersfield Daily Brief: Sunday, August 16, 2026
Good morning Bakersfield. It’s Sunday, August 16th, 2026, and we’re waking up to a warm start to the day with temperatures already in the low 80s. Today’s top story is a tragic wrong-way crash on Highway 99 that claimed three lives overnight. We’ve also got a moderate air quality day ahead, with no active weather alerts for Kern County.
The Kern Overnight
The night’s most serious incident unfolded just before 1 a.m. on southbound Highway 99 north of 7th Standard Road, where a vehicle fire and extrication drew a heavy response. Crews worked to free a pinned, unconscious subject from a vehicle, ultimately pulling two patients out as green tags. Around the same time, a DUI driver fled eastbound from the 33rd Street area in a white BMW 5 Series. Earlier in the evening, a palm tree fire climbed into the roof of a two-story apartment complex on Spice Way off Villalobos Street, drawing a reinforced alarm with Engine 7 as incident commander. Units also staged on Price Street around 9:48 p.m. for a possible shooting that never developed on the air, and handled a long string of domestics and disturbances — including one at a Camellia Village apartment where a wall was punched. Shortly before 5:40 a.m., one vehicle struck a parked car at Myrtle Avenue, drawing multiple engine companies and Battalion 4 for a patient assessment.
Today's weather
Expect a high near 98° and a low around 72° tonight. It’s currently 82° at Meadows Field (KBFL). No active weather alerts are in effect for Kern County, and air quality is holding at a moderate AQI of 58.
Top stories
23ABC reports that three people are dead after a wrong-way, three-vehicle crash on Highway 99 early Sunday morning. According to California Highway Patrol Bakersfield, a white Honda Accord was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes on Highway 99, north of 7th Standard Road, when it collided with a white BMW 530i and a white Chevrolet Colorado at around 12:44 a.m. The crash caused the Honda to catch fire. CHP says all 3 occupants inside the vehicle died from their injuries. The driver and one other occupant of the BMW sustained major injuries, while the 2 occupants in the Chevrolet sustained minor injuries. Officials say it is unknown whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
KGET 17 tells us that Bakersfield police and fire chiefs presented their Fourth of July reports during a Friday meeting, revealing both progress and ongoing concerns about fireworks-related incidents in the city. Kevin Albertson, Chief of the Bakersfield Fire Department, said the holiday brought serious consequences for people across the state, with significant injuries and even fatalities reported. A total of 106 citations were issued by the Bakersfield Police and Fire departments combined in relation to the holiday. Compared to 2025, fire-related responses to both departments dropped 6% in 2026. Despite the decrease, residents and officials say more work remains. Bakersfield City Councilman Eric Arias said stronger policies are in the works to deter illegal fireworks use.
23ABC shares that Carlos Baldovinos, executive director of the Mission at Kern County, helped shape a federal best practices toolkit aimed at addressing addiction treatment within the homeless community. Baldovinos was among roughly 22 professionals from across the country who gathered in Washington, D.C., in the spring to work with the Trump administration, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the nation’s drug czar to develop the toolkit. The toolkit outlines best practices for working with individuals dealing with addiction within the homeless population, covering topics including program length, transitional housing, long-term mentorship, and workforce development. Baldovinos said one of the most debated topics during the two-day Washington meeting was how long recovery should last, pushing back on the view that recovery should only be for a treatment program of 28 days.
